Getting Around St. Croix:
Car Rentals, Taxis, and Uber (ish)

There is no Uber, Lyft, or other major ride-share companies operating on St. Croix. There are official taxis with an association and published rates, unofficial taxis with less formal rates, and some newer companies attempting to break through. St. Croix is about 22 miles from end to end. It is easy to navigate and understanding the local transportation options is key to planning a seamless trip. We highly recommend renting a vehicle for the most freedom, and below is a complete breakdown of all your options, including taxis and new local apps.

Car Rentals: Best Plan for Exploring St. Croix

For maximum convenience, independence, and the ability to reach all beaches and points of interest, renting a car is the preferred transportation method on St. Croix. It allows you to follow the island rhythm and truly explore at your own pace.

Local Car Rental Companies

Local Car Rental Companies are very good, and not all of the “national” rental names are directly affiliated with their stateside brand.

Centerline Car Rentals has two locations, one of which is at the STX airport, and it is the most popular rental car company on St. Croix.

Twin City Car Rental and Judi of Croix are not at the airport, but both do vehicle pick-up and drop-off at the airport.

St. Croix Taxi: A Good Way to Travel From the Airport

Availability: Taxis are easy to find at Henry E. Rohlsen Airport (STX) and at the Frederiksted cruise ship pier when a ship is in port.

Getting Picked Up: Securing a taxi outside of major towns or popular areas, especially after sunset, is not guaranteed. You may need a referral or to book a ride well in advance.

Fares: Official taxis are identified by a "TP" on their license plate and operate with published zone-based rates from the Taxi Association. Always confirm your fare with the driver before departing to ensure a smooth transaction.

New Local Ride-Share & Concierge Services

The St. Croix transportation landscape is evolving with new, locally developed apps and pre-booked services:

VI Hail: This app-based service aims to provide a true ride-share structure similar to major mainland companies. It features online payments, driver ratings, and tracking. Check their website for current service areas and driver availability. www.VIHail.com

VI Ubah: Operating as a concierge tour and on-call service, VI Ubah offers pre-paid, reserved pick-up and drop-offs around the island. This is a dependable option for those unwilling to drive. Reservations and pre-payment (often via Venmo or PayPal) are required. More information is available on their website. www.VIUbah.com

Key Driving Facts for St. Croix

Rule of the Road: You drive on the left side of the road in the U.S. Virgin Islands. This is the most crucial adjustment for visitors.

Steering Wheel: Unlike in true left-side-driving countries, the steering wheel remains on the left side of the car (US-style).

Safety Tip: Drivers are generally courteous. Take your time, be kind, and remember that left turns are easier than right turns, as they cross less traffic.

Road Quality: Most roads are well-maintained, but be prepared for narrower streets and significant potholes in rural areas, especially at night.

Headlights: Some headlights are designed for right-side driving, which may make oncoming traffic appear brighter. Drive cautiously, especially at night.

The Jeep Factor: A sedan is fine for major roads and an SUV or a Jeep rental can provide extra clearance and comfort for exploring the island's more rugged, off-the-beaten-path destinations.

Parking Tips: Parking can be tight in Christiansted. Look for designated paid parking areas, especially near Fort Christiansvaern. Frederiksted is generally easier for parking.

Pro Tip: Familiarize yourself with the roads before you arrive! A series of helpful videos from Centerline Car Rentals is available on YouTube to prepare you for the unique driving conditions.

Driving on the left requires a mental shift. Take your time, focus on the flow of traffic, and remember that driving on St. Croix is a vacation pace.
